Mittl Motors to Speedway Joe Cup Win at Champion

Champion Speedway, Owego, NY July 9, 2011

Adam Mittl went undefeated at Champion Speedway for the second time this season to take home his second Speedway Joe Cup Championship. The Speedway Joe Cup honors local speedway fan, Joe Hodak, who has only missed a hand-full of events in Champion's 35 year history.

On this particular evening Champion saw one of it's deepest talent pools of riders for a regular season race night in years and the racing was top shelf with many exciting battles and lead changes. The full first division field of 16 riders put on a great show. Long-time speedway veteran from CA, "Mad" Jon Stasiefski flew in for the night while talented teenagers Mikey Buman and Corey Brookes made their first appearances of the season. Mikey Robinson, a former US Open finalist, was in from NZ and rode very respectably despite not having raced in 9 years. Former star, John "Boogeyman" Lewis continued his comeback after a 20 year hiatus to win the C-Final. Local flat-track ace, Todd Hunter, who is back at speedway after a 10 year layoff, rode well to win Division Two.

The D-1 program kicked off with Casey Donholt putting a smooth ride together to win heat one over Tuff McBride, Keith Hawkins and Lewis in that order. Jeremy Parsons, last weeks winner, won event two with Buman second and Jeff Garlinghouse third. Stasiefski suffered a broken master link and scored a DNF. Gene Bonsignore won the third session over Andy Crawford with Brookes third and Lee Bailey fourth. Mittl took home his race with Jerry Harman second and Robinson third. Dave Clark was fourth.

McBride was back in a familiar position winning the first heat of round two with Clark just behind him followed by Crawford then Garlinghouse. Mittl made an unreal pass to split Donholt and Buman next and went on to win with Buman second. Bailey was fourth. Parsons looked strong again and got first with Harman second, Lewis third and Brookes fourth. Bonsignore closed things out with a second win after passing Stasiefski and Robinson early on. Robinson and Stasiefski had a great see-saw battle for second with Robinson just getting there in the end. Hawkins was fourth.

McBride gained another three-points in the third run of heat races with Harman second and Baily third. Stasiefski could not overcome a tape penalty. The 63 year old Bonsignore put on a good show in his heat jumping out to lead Bumand and Clark for about 3 laps. Clark was pressuring on the outside and Bonsignore left way too much room for Buman on the inside and Buman passed for the win. Bonsignore ended third with Lewis last. Mittl won again from Hawkins, Brookes and Garlinghouse in that order and Parsons and Donholt had a good tussle with Parsons emerging. Robinson was third, Crawford last.

After intermission Buman and McBride took a one two then Parsons was first again over Hawkins. Bonsignore then led Harman until hitting something in the track on the last lap and getting wide allowing Harman by for a checkered flag. Mittl stayed unbeaten with a win over second placed Lewis.

With the top five in points going to the A-Final and Bonsignore and Harman tied on points for the last position a runoff was held. Bonsignore led Harman again for most of the two laps but moved wide to cover Harman on the outside and Harman wisely dove back on the open inside for the lead and win.

Mittl and Parsons were tied for points and tossed a coin for gate choice which Mittl won. With Mittl in one, Parsons in two, Buman in three, Harman in four and McBride in five the tapes blasted up and Mittl was gone on his Oakley/Scotts Headers Jawa on his way to another unbeaten night! Buman tucked in for a solid second place finish while Harman took third, McBride fourth and Parsons was last.

If the racing was any indication of whats to come at the next race, the Omar Lightner Cup, July 23rd, then fans have a lot to be excited about!

Champion Speedway's go-kart fun track is now open and many fans and riders had a blast on it during and after the races. It will now be open Tuesday and Wednesday and Friday evenings and Saturdays and Sundays.

Legault no match for Monarchs!! Edinburgh @ Newport

A great pass on the last bend of heat 15 by a rejuvenated Kevin Wolbert snatched a two-point win over Glasgow in as hard-fought a Scottish derby as we have seen for years.

It might have been Glasgow’s first meeting of the season but they lived up to their supporters’ expectations, with Joe Screen outstanding, and good contributions from most of their side.

Therefore Monarchs did very well to take a 10-point advantage in mid-meeting with some determined racing, Wethers, Wolbert, Tully and Cook to the fore.

We took 5-1s in heats 3, 6 and 9, all of these involving some exciting, determined overtaking. The pass of the night though was Kevin’s in heat 10, when he powered past James Grieves who was on a TR.

Kalle Katajisto didn’t have a good night but the reasons were mechanical. He conceded the two 5-1s Glasgow scored but promises there is better to come.

It was his engine which helped transform Kevin’s display, which of course culminated in a terrific never-say-die chase in heat 15. Tigers had come back from an 8-point deficit with three races left, taking two 4-2s and holding a match-saving 5-1 in the last heat – until Wolbert pulled off that miraculous last bend inside pass on James Grieves.

We haven’t seen anything better from our German star since his early days with us in 2009.

Our two reserves suffered heavy crashes. There was a long delay for treatment to Jay Herne in heat 8, but the good news is that the only damage is concussion and he is expected to be released on Saturday morning. It was a heavy knock though and he will not be riding again this weekend.

Ashley suddenly clipped the fence in heat 14 and fell awkwardly on to the centre green. He was on the parade truck and seemed to be fine after the match.

This result doesn’t look to bad at a first glance but the Wasps camp will be bitterly disappointed to not walk away with at least one league point from this fixture.

After going 8 points down after 7 races, the Wasps went 2 ahead by the end of heat 10 and an exciting finish to the meeting looked to be ahead.

Sadly, after an interval, the Wasps fell apart, much like they did last Saturday at home to Rye House, and the Redcar Bears pulled away for a ten point win.

The Wasps management will be happy with the return of Robin Aspegren, who bagged a very useful paid 8 from 4 rides on his return to action, whilst the undoubted talent of Todd Kurtz is finally starting to shine through.

Despite not having the best of starts, Wasps skipper Leigh Lanham ended his evening with two impressive wins over the previously unbeaten Aaron Summers.

“Despite only losing by ten points, I am a bit gutted for the team as I feel we done exceptionally well mid-meeting to overcome an 8 point deficit to go into the lead” said the skipper.

He added: “Our team is just not firing on all cylinders at the moment. I have underscored a bit at home lately but on the whole am satisfied with my two away meetings from the last week. Hopefully this transfers to my home form!

Robin made a good return but other riders struggled. I believe Redcar are a strong team at home in particular and I think most would of taken a ten point defeat before the meeting, but to be leading after 10 races, the result doesn’t look as good.

I am sure with Robin back in the team, we can overhaul Edinburgh on Saturday at home. A home win is a must now and as well as focusing on my own form, I will be doing all I can to motivate the rest of the boys in order to net our first home league points.

I am positive that when Alex Davies returns to the fold, we will improve as a unit as he will be a high scoring reserve without a doubt”.

The Wasps host the Edinburgh Monarchs on Saturday evening in a Premier League fixture, with the usual start time of 7pm.

The Wasps ran out surprising winners last night at Rye House by 49 points to 41, just 24 hours after being turned over by the Rockets at Queensway Meadows.

The star of the show was Swedish reserve Anders Mellgren who bagged 11+2 from 6 rides and it should have been more, retiring on the final lap of heat 12 whilst comfortably leading Ritchie Hawkins, although the Swede did push home for a lap to take a paid second after Nelson had already retired for the Rockets.

It was a massive turn around for the Wasps and the big team talk given to them before the meeting seemed to do them the world of good, and hopefully it is the start of a new chapter for the Wasps as they finally get some league points on board.

“We have a very talented line up, that is why I am so frustrated with their form so far” said co promoter Steve Mallett.

He added: “But this result proves we can pull off big results. Rye House with their superb top three at home is not a place many will win at in 2011, so it makes the result even better.

If we had a poor line up and had been in such a poor run of form as we have been, it would be understandable. But we have a very good team with very capable riders, that is why I have became so frustrated. But we will go to Redcar with our heads held high and see what happens.

Alex Davies is only about a fortnight away from a return and Robin Aspegren fully intends to return when he regains match fitness, so it will be interesting to see how the lower order perform over the next few weeks. With Anders Mellgren scoring so well, how could you let him go?”.

BRUMMIES 52 LAKESIDE 40 Thursday April 14, 2011

SKIPPER Krzysztof Kasprzak scored a brilliant paid maximum to inspire Birmingham to their first Elite League points of the new season.

Kasprzak put in a stunning display in another highly entertaining Perry Barr encounter as the Brummies saw off the challenge of Lakeside, with reserve Kevin Wolbert also in terrific form.

The combination of Kasprzak and Ales Dryml proved very profitable with two 5-1s, the second coming in dramatic fashion as the Hammers’ Adam Shields came to grief on the second lap as the home duo were moving inside him in Heat 10.

Kasprzak’s win over the double-points Lee Richardson in Heat 13 made sure of match victory, but there was more action in the penultimate race with Wolbert taking his third win of the night and Daniel King surging inside Kyle Legault into the last bend.

Ex-Brummies rider Legault fell as King crossed the line in third place, which was enough to clinch all three points for the home side with Kasprzak wrapping up his maximum in the final race.

Boss Graham Drury said: “We sat the riders down beforehand and went through exactly what we expected, and I was delighted with the response. It was a hard-earned victory with some great racing and we’ll head to Coventry tomorrow feeling much better about things.”

F.I.M. reach silencer arrangement!!

The Polish Motor Union have come to agreement with the FIM over the use of new silencers in speedway.

The PZM are still to use the old silencers in their league, but they have agreed that new silencers will be used elsewhere, and their riders can use them.

That means that the Polish riders, including world champion Tomasz Gollob, is free to compete in the Grand Prix series.
Poland, the team world champions, will also now defended their title.
The president of the central committee, who run speedway in Poland, Piotr Szymanski confirmed riders would also now be free to compete in other leagues if they wanted.
"If the riders agree to ride in foreign leagues, with the new silencers, then they will compete at their own risk," Szymanski told SportoweFakty.
The news is a boost for many Elite League clubs who can now push ahead with the plans with up to seven Poles have contracts to ride in England - indeed of the ten clubs, only Wolves and King's Lynn were not affected by the row.
One club boosted straight away is Swindon who are able to use Tomasz Chrzanowski and Maciej Janowski on Monday at Belle Vue - when they had lined up two guests to use.

The Wasps went down to a 7 point defeat in their opening League meeting of the season, against nearest rivals, the Somerset Rebels.

The home side were up against it from the start, having their star reserve Alex Davies, who has been in super form so far, replaced by a National League rider in Paul Starke.

They still made a right go of it though and made a brilliant comeback, coming from 10 points down after 8 races to just 3 after 10.

The Wasps star performer was, without a doubt, Swedish sensation Kim Nilsson who netted 11 points from 5 rides and in all honesty should of scored 14. It was only a puncture on lap 2 of heat 11 that prevented this. The Swede was well away from the previously unbeaten Travis McGowan at this stage.

Nilsson has most certainly improved greatly over the last year and produced some stunning passes, his most notable one was his outside overtake of Cory Gathercole in heat 4 after missing the gate.

The new racing surface had already produced some quality racing prior to tonight but this meeting was by far and large the best meeting of the season so far at Queensway Meadows.

The stand out heats are, without question, heat 10 and heat 15.

In heat 10, the Rebels pairing of Sam Masters and Christian Hefenbrock made good starts. By bend 4, lap 1 Mark Jones had burst inside the whole field to take up the lead and was hotly pursued by Masters an Hefenbrock. Wasps captain Lanham first picked off Hefenbrock and then stalked Masters before making a lovely inside pass on turns 1 and 2 of lap 3 to join his partner for a 5-1. It was a cracking race which brought the house down and was worth the admission money alone.

Heat 15 was equally as good with Gathercole and McGowan making the gate. Nilsson chased McGowan around the outside before squeezing through the smallest of gaps going into turn 1 of lap 3 before Lanham quickly dived inside the Australian. Nilsson set off after Gathercole, bouncing off the air fence and given another lap, the outcome would have been very interesting.

The Wasps were essentially hampered by tracking a National League rider in place of Davies whilst the addition of Howarth to Somersets ranks most probably made them stronger.

As well as Nilsson’s retirement whilst leading, the Wasps also lost points when Legault came a cropper in heat 5 when beginning to mount a serious challenge on McGowan.

Take nothing away from Somerset though, they came and done a fine job and left Newport with all 4 Premier League points on offer. Expect

The Hammers recovered well from the mid-meeting loss of number one Lee Richardson to overcome Raceway specialists Wolverhampton, who were led into battle by the unbeaten Peter Karlsson.
Richardson crashed out of the tenth heat whilst attempting to round the Wolves pairing of Tyron Proctor and Tai Woffinden, hitting the track hard on the third turn and enduring lengthy medical attention. After some time down on the ground he was taken away in an ambulance with tissue damage and did not re-appear – but Hammers fought valiantly over the final few heats to ensure they collected enough points to see off their opponents.
There was some good on-track action throughout and proceedings were made interesting to say the least in the early part of the meeting when a sticky patch of the track on the second turn caused the riders a few problems. The opening heat had seen Richardson pull clear of Fredrik Lindgren to join Kauko Nieminen at the front of the race, only to falter on said turn and leave a window open for Lindgren to snatch second place.
Most eyes were on Lindgren, arguably the Elite League’s star performer, although even he on this occasion was outshone by his team mate Peter Karlsson, who raced to a quite superb eighteen points maximum and looked faultless throughout. This was save when he was out-trapped by Peter Ljung in heat four but handed the race victory when Ljung ran into trouble on that second bend.
Ljung recovered well from the mishap and rattled off a couple of wins, producing a couple of electrifying starts and featuring in an excellent clash with Woffinden in heat seven. His major highlight, though, came in heat eleven as he powered from the tapes and left Lindgren in his wake, pulling off an excellent victory and a 4-2 heat advantage for his team alongside Kyle Legault.(Shown above)
That heat put the Hammers ten points to the good although the smart money was on Wolves’ boss Peter Adams reserving his tactical ride option until heat thirteen with Lindgren and Karlsson present rather than the immediate heat twelve. How vital, then, that the home side took maximum points from that race and it was thanks to a fighting 5-1 from Adam Shields alongside Legault, who drove in front of Proctor down the backstraight to join his team-mate.
The expected tactical manoeuvre did arrive in heat thirteen and with Richardson missing the 8-1 was somewhat inevitable, although Ljung did try very hard and pushed both Karlsson and Lindgren hard. The chance to sew up the match presented itself in heat fourteen, though, and the home pairing of Legault and the returning Jonas Davidsson duly slotted in behind Woffinden to ensure victory.
Wolves notched up a consolation league point with another Lindgren/Karlsson 5-1 in the final race but the home side nonetheless started their 2011 Elite League campaign with a win and several encouraging displays to show for it, too.

The Wasps got their season off to a fine start with a 14 point win over the Rest of the World, and it should have been more.

The home side showed good form and it was most pleasing to see Swedish star Robin Aspegren bounce back to form with a 10+1 score, and it should most certainly of been higher. He was comfortably holding second place in heat 15 behind team mate Leigh Lanham before pulling a locker and taking a tumble.

Aspegren was superb throughout, riding some sensational first and second bends which ensured that despite missing the gate, he was leading going into the third and fourth bends.

After a disappointing return last weekend, Aspegren was keen to show the fans just what he was capable and he more than succeeded in his mission.

He was superbly backed up by captain Leigh Lanham. The Wasps number one took two rides to settle down but reeled three wins off after and ended on a high.

He was on the wrong end of two 5-1s in his opening two rides but used his track craft to work his way from the back to reduce those 5-1s into 4-2s.

The other big star for the Wasps was Alex Davies who, barring a rider error from Kim Nilsson in heat 7, would probably of netted a paid maximum.

Davies and Nilsson gated on a 5-1 over Justin Sedgmen but Nilsson took Davies very wide exiting turn 2. Clearly Nilsson was unaware that this was his team mate though.

Apart from that, Davies was superb and was the only rider to genuinely lower Adam Shields’ colours in heat 11. Davies went around the Elite League heatleader in super style and rode a magnificent 4 laps to hold him off.

Kyle Legault and Nilsson went quietly about their business tonight although many will feel there is plenty more to come from both over the course of the season.

Todd Kurtz was another who went quietly about his business with five paid seven and the only Wasp who appeared to struggle somewhat was Mark Jones.

The Australian gained his only points in heat 8 when defeating James White Williams although he was very unlucky to concede a point in heat 10 to Thomas Jorgensen.

Jones led Jorgensen by some distance but going into turns three and four of lap three, he locked the bike right up and done well to stay on the bike. Sadly he allowed Jorgensen past him although he very nearly re-took third place on the final lap.

Adam Shields started like a train but was well defeated by Davies in heat 11 before packing up in heat 13 with an engine failure whilst in a cracking race with Lanham.

Howe was very good for the visitors and received back up from Sedgmen but apart from a heat win from Herne in heat 8, the visitors had no other consistent scorers.

The Wasps fans will be over the moon to see such a turn around in form from Aspegren and will be hoping for a few more points from Nilsson and Legault especially as they take on the Somerset Rebels next weekend.

But against a select team with three strong heatleaders, the Wasps on the whole performed very well and will definitely be hoping for a win next Saturday as they open their League account against the Somerset Rebels with a start time of 7pm once again.

Legault helps out with paid 6 points!!

Elite League Challenge Friday 25th March 2011

The doors opened on the 2011 season at the home of the Lakeside Hammers as the Essex men put on a strong display to run out comfortable winners against Swindon.
With both teams hit by the dispute over Polish participation due to the new silencer introduction, the visiting Robins had a somewhat makeshift look to them with both Maciej Janowski and Tomasz Chrzanowski missing and the Hammers themselves minus Piotr Swiderski.
Nonetheless, it was a very determined performance from the home team that was spearheaded by a masterful display from Lee Richardson, who stormed to a paid maximum from his five rides.
It was a commanding display from the Hammers skipper, who formed a potent partnership with Kauko Nieminen as the pair were paid for 5-1 advantages in each of their three programmed rides together.
The highlight of this dynamic duo’s outings was in heat ten, when first Nieminen and then Richardson stormed past fast starting Simon Stead to steal another 5-1. Equally, Lewis Bridger proved a very useful stand-in for the home side, storming to three victories including an impressive from the back win over Stead in heat nine.
Despite the commanding scoreline, there was some close racing to savour, particularly in the latter stages of the meeting. Nieminen was again in the thick of the action in heat eight, driving past former Hammer Leigh Lanham to take victory and prevent the Robins’ guest from tasting tactical ride success.
Visiting number one Scott Nicholls had a mixed night, opening the meeting on the wrong end of a 5-1 and touching the tapes in heat thirteen. Things came good in the last race, though, as Nicholls put on a spectacular effort to chase down Richardson and narrowly missed out on final heat glory by half a bikes length.
Comfortable this may have been, but it proved a good warm-up for both sides and the Hammers now look to next week and an eagerly awaited clash against track specialists Wolverhampton.

Legault at home Saturday 26th!!

The Wasps make their track debut as a team on Saturday against the Rest of the World select, with a 7pm start time.

All seven Wasps have had track time this season already having competed in the opening meeting of the season at Newport Speedway last week, the Prince of Wales trophy.

The Rest of the World are led by the winner of last weeks Prince of Wales trophy, Ryan Fisher!

“The Fish” was sublime last week, passing Niels Kristian Iversen in the final to take the honours in superb style.

He will certainly be a hard nut to crack on Saturday and the Wasps heat leaders have their work cut out in trying to stop him gaining a maximum, although Leigh Lanham got the better of him during the qualifying heats last week.

Backing up the American star will be Scunthorpe duo David Howe and Thomas Jorgensen.

Howe also took part in the Prince of Wales trophy last week scoring 8 points and is a rider who has proved time and time again that he is a huge force around the Hayley Stadium.

He has won the New Year Classic and Prince of Wales trophy in previous seasons and is without a doubt a track expert.

Jorgensen is making his British League debut this season after catching the eye of a few promoters whilst touring the UK last season.

He is also making his Queensway Meadows debut on Saturday night and it will be interesting to see how he goes.

Claus Nedermark is another young Dane and like Jorgensen is making his British League debut this season although not for Scunthorpe but the newly promoted Plymouth Devils. Again, like Jorgensen, Nedermark will be making his Queensway Meadows debut on Saturday.

Newport Hornets number 1 Jay Herne completes the Rest of the World selects top 5.

It will be very fascinating to see how Herne fares against the Wasps as well as being some valuable track time on his new home track prior to the Newport Hornets season kicking off.

Down at reserve, the Rest of the World, track Aussie Robert Branford and local lad James White Williams.

Branford was a star of the National League last season with League winners Buxton and has made the step up to the Premier League this season with Redcar. He is very highly rated and should be one of the better 3.00 reserves in the league and it will be a good test for the Newport reserves to face him.

White Williams is the official Wasps number 8 and is also a vital part of the Hornets set up for the new season.

Like Herne, the meeting will give him plenty of track time in preparation for his upcoming season with the Hornets.

Wasps promoter Steve Mallett believes the Rest of the World select team will give the Wasps a good run for their money on Saturday.

“We didn’t want to field a select team that would come to Newport and wipe the floor with us as that would do our riders no good at all and would probably have a negative impact on the crowd” said Mallett.

He added: “Instead we have put together a realistic Premier League team. It contains two class acts in Ryan Fisher and David Howe as well as some young up and coming talent who also take up heat leader positions in the Plymouth and Scunthorpe teams.

We want to give our team a competitive run out before our first league meeting with Somerset next week.

The Lakeside Hammers will kick off their 2011 Elite League season tonight with a challenge meeting against Swindon with the weather set fair.
After a chaotic winter off track Speedway Racing will now take its rightful position centre stage as both teams look to blast away the cobwebs and come to grips with the controversial new FIM silencer regulations.
The Hammers are awaiting final confirmation with regards to the availability of Polish star Piotr Swiderski following his country’s decision to ban the new silencer with Eastbourne GB international Lewis Bridger likely to fill the No.4 position.
Swedish international Peter Ljung has caught the eye in training and he is elevated into a heatleader position following his storming end to the 2010 campaign whilst Canadian Kyle Legault (pictured above at the recent press day)will make his official Hammers debut determined to take the early chance to make the No.6 position his own.
The Robins are led by top British rider Scott Nicholls and fellow countryman Simon Stead and also include Hammers legend and former favourite Leigh Lanham as a guest for one of their absent Poles.
Tapes are up at 8.00pm, with junior practice from 6.45pm.
The Hammers Co Promoter and Team Manager Jon Cook commented: “The team looked very good in practice and the new silencer doesn’t seem to present any problems at our Raceway thus far so we are looking forward to getting into the action tonight.
“Piotr’s situation is a worry and we flew him back to Poland on Thursday to see if he could sort things out in person and we hope he will be with us tonight although, more realistically, we need him here for the League campaign, which starts next Friday, 1st April, when Wolverhampton will be the visitors.”

Barlow dominated the meeting, bringing his total points to 40 only two points behind Charlie Venegas. Kyle Legault showed great improvement once getting a bike more to his liking and is definitely coming out strong and will soon be a very strong contender. Kelly Kerrigan doesn't get his name "Krazy" Kelly for no reason, he comes out every race pushing himself along with everyone else proving that he is a strong contender. Terchila having a good night showing his determination and patience taking advantage of younger riders mistakes and making his move to move in to 4th place. Warburton made his debut and was shaken a little when coming off a couple of times but came back showing respectable steady riding. This was his first round this season leaving him at a slight disadvantage. Mann struggled a bit in front of his home town doing a 360 turn in the main event giving him a 5th place finish instead of his usual podium finish.

Championship Leader, Charlie “The Edge” Venegas struggled a little in Heat 1 as whilst in 2nd place behind James “Demolition Man” Mann he was passed by the “British Bulldog”, Anthony Barlow, alas for Barlow and Mann this didn’t last and on the back straight of the last lap Venegas got the better of both Barlow and Mann entering the 3rd turn and took the chequered flag. Other than this the highlight of the Qualifying Heats was the strong challenge of the Canadian Champion, Kyle Legault, who took a 1st and 2nd place to book his place on the front row of the grid for the Main Final alongside Venegas and Barlow. Mann meanwhile had to be content with a place on the front row of the grid for the Last Chance and although he couldn’t quite catch the Californian, Kelly Kerrigan, he did enough to get to the Main Final as did Nathan Siegel, a Quad rider going fairly well now on the ice after a spell in the UK doing second halves in 2009. In fact it was in the Last Chance that Siegel showed his metal as he came off the back row to take 3rd position and with it a place in the Main Final. The highlight of the 6-lap Main Final was the form of Mann, (who incidentally won the Quad Class in this Meeting against a very strong field) who came through from 5th to 3rd place just taking Legault before the chequered flag. Venegas once again dominated the Main Final and after 2 rounds of the Series has a commanding lead of 8 points.

The biggest Motorcycle show in North America,for 2011,takes place in early January. The Canadian Speedway Racing Association(C.S.R.A.)has a booth at the show and will be avidly promoting the sport. The Toronto Airport International Centre has been the host for this event for many years. During the weekend long show, thousands of people will pass through looking for bikes, bargains and all things motorcycle.

Legault in South Dakota indoor ice event!!

It was the British Bulldog, Anthony Barlow who looked to be back his best, but even he couldn’t quite match the superb riding of Charlie “The Edge” Venegas.
Canada‘s Speedway Champion, Kyle Legault had travelled across the border hoping to make an impression and was a bit disappointed to finish down the field in 5th place. In fact it was the former British League Rider, James Mann who took 3rd spot with Eddie Martinez 4th and Indianapolis’s Jim Terchila in 6th.
The qualifying heats saw some good racing, with Venegas on the gas in Heat 1 as he came through from 3rd to 1st passing both Mann and Barlow to the chequered flag. Heat 2 saw the veteran Martinez take a tapes to flag victory, but was unable to hold onto the lead in Heat 3 when Venegas edged his way past and both Legault, a faller on lap 1 and Siegel, retiring on the 1st lap both failing to complete 54 laps. Heat 4 saw Barlow take the win from Mann.
In the Last Chance Mann held off the chasing Legault and Terchila and all 3 took their places on the back row of the Grid in the Main Final.

News from New York state!!

Action Park East has seen its last speedway race and has been officially sold. While it was a sad moment to see the closure of a facility that was an important piece of NY Speedway history it marks the beginning of an awesome and exciting opportunity for the sport. I have purchased a new property in Watkins Glen, the capitol of racing in NY State, and have already been approved by the town board to build a new speedway track there to replace Action Park. The property in Watkins is an existing family fun park with mini golf, an arcade, 2 go-kart tracks and bumper boats plus a nice wooded area for a scrambles course and a pond big enough for winter ice races. The property is just 2 MILES STRAIGHT ON THE SAME ROAD AS THE NASCAR TRACK! This could be huge for our sport and I hope to raise enough funds to be able to have the new speedway track ready for opening this summer. While I am sad to see Action Park go and apologize to those who will miss it, I am proud we were able to bring it back to life for 9 years so that those in the modern generation of speedway could say they raced there and enjoyed it. We had a lot of great times up there!!! In its early years of its second life it thrived on a Sat night but over the past few years when Champion Speedway had to switch back to Saturdays again the two facilities were bumping heads for Sat nights and it was just not making sense anymore. Racing at the new facility will be Friday nights and the upside potential is just much more than what we could do with APE. I want to thank all of the people who supported APE over the years and especially thank Tim Mathewson who worked very hard to help keep it going the past few seasons. Rick Redpath also put a lot of heart and soul into it and I thank him! My enthusiasm for the place had been drained slightly since being burned in a big way finacially by former tenants of the bar and a tenant of the track but those guys kept their energy up! Its new future will be as a baseball driving range and traning ground so at least a high rise will not be built over it and sports will continue. Ironically, Tuff McBride was the tracks first Champion in 1983 and Adam Mittl was its last, both of whom are still racing and took one two in this years overall points chase. The last event ever was this years US Open round and we had a nice crowd and a lot of fun, memories will live on forever!

The Newport Wasps came away from a tense tussle at Rye House Speedway in Hertfordshire on Saturday(11th) evening with a narrow away 46 -44 victory over the Rye House Rockets and three Premier League points to consolidate their chance of competing in the end-of-season Jack Young Shield.

The Wasps led from the beginning of the match and needed at least a second place in the final heat to gain victory. Kyle Legault duly obliged.

U.S.open this weekend!!

The US Open is this weekend...Sat at 7pm at Action Park, Sunday at 6pm at Champion Speedway. See 3-time US National Champ Mike Faria, former #9 in the World/2000 US Open Champ and World Team Cup Champ, Josh Larsen, defending Champion, Tommy Hedden and former British League rider and 2007 US Open Champ, Dukie Ermolenko, take on the East Coasts best! Tuff McBride has been the most consistent guy all year in NY and is ready, Adam Mittl was unstoppable last Sat and looks to have his form back, Buman and Donholt have both had good seasons and Parsons is getting back into form lately. Gene Bonsignore has been strong lately and there are many more solid guys that will be on the program. The walls at both tracks are freshly painted white, the tracks are in good form, the PA has all-new wiring at Champion, the Support Div will be very tough and the bathrooms look a lot nicer thanks to the Harris family. New US Open shirts and hoodies will be on sale and live music, including the teen sensation band, HOVER, will be at both venues. There is some good advertising out there and it should be a weekend you don't want to miss!

With the Canadian Speedway Championship event just a week away, the anticipation of this event was evident in the pit conversations and the riders, in their preparations of their bikes.

The event saw a welcome return by Terry Rideout who was back from vacation. He was joined by Mike Hammond, C.J. Hesmer, John Bennett, Jeff Orosz, Gary Hesmer, Glenn Brown, Aaron Hesmer and Rob Dixon to complete in a single class of Division 1 racing.

Round one began with Brown, Rideout, Dixon, C.J. Hesmer and Hammond taking to the track. C.J. Hesmer took the line and held it to lead the way in front of a charging Hammond. Sadly Hammond's over zealous attempt led to a slide out on turn 2, but he was able to remount and complete the race. With Hesmer leading, Rob Dixon pushed hard but was unable to catch him leaving Glenn Brown to finish in 3rd and Rideout in 4 th.

Heat two had Jeff Orosz, Aaron Hesmer, John Bennett and Gary Hesmer to entertain the large crowd. This was a start to finish win for Orosz ahead of Aaron Hesmer, Gary Hesmer and John Bennett.

Round two saw Mike Hammond sensibly riding in front of a great battle between Terry Rideout and Glenn Brown. Brown was leading Rideout for 3 laps, but was unable to hold back a round the outside sweep by Rideout to gain the 4th spot. Aaron Hesmer comfortably held back Orosz the grab the win.

Heat 2 with Rob Dixon, C.J. Hesmer, Gary Hesmer and John Bennett saw Dixon charging hard to get to the first corner but Hesmer was too much as they came onto the back straight, this gave Dixon a real push and they duelled all race, but Hesmer kept his head and took the win. Gary Hesmer well ahead of a well-paced Bennett suffered a last bend mechanical problem and coasted over the line, but still grabbed the important 3rd place.

The Consi-Final was Glenn Brown, Mike Hammond, Terry Rideout and John Bennett.This was a solid win for the returning Rideout. Hammond, again having problems on turns 3 and 4, slid out twice and was lapped by Bennett to end a miserable night for himself. Glenn Brown also showed that his 2nd outing of the season was a good one with a solid 2nd place finish.

The final was set, as a maybe final for the Championship next week. Jeff Orosz, Aaron Hesmer, Rob Dixon, Gary Hesmer and C.J. Hesmer. The crowd took a big breath as the tapes rose to see Aaron Hesmer shoot to the front ahead of Jeff Orosz, C.J Hesmer, Rob Dixon and Gary Hesmer. The evenly spaced race proved to be just that, and congratulations are in order to Aaron Hesmer for a second week of success at the Welland Speedway track!

Unnatached rider Chris Slabon beat Elite & Premier league riders to claim the Welsh Open held at Newport on Sunday. The Canadian won three of his five qualifiying heats to gain a place in grand final with Ryan Fisher, Edward Kennett and Craig Watson. Slabon gated first and led from the start to secure his first Welsh Open.

The Ipswich Witches return to Brandon stadium for an Elite League 'B' fixture against the Coventry Bees tonight.

The home team are missing Przemyslaw Pawlicki due to the World Under-21 semi-finals at the weekend. As their other double upper and number eight have a PL commitment tonight they have booked Richard Hall as a guest.

Paris season opens!!

A great night of spectacular racing including quads, flat track, junior flat track and speedway, gave the crowd some fun on a warm spring night!

The speedway event was hindered by rider commitments away from the track, but the riders who showed for the event, really did a great job!

Gary Hesmer, Tommy Hensby, Mike Hammond, Aaron Hesmer and Katalin Davis all took part in a 5-man heat in heat 1. Sadly for Katalin, her bike died on her in turn 3 and she was amazingly missed by a charging Mike Hammond. 14 year-old Tommy Hensby, jumped up at the chance to duel with his fellow top level riders, and did a great job looking controlled and safe all night long!

The Hesmer cousins dueled all night, and gave the crowd something to cheer about! With the final race of the night completing the event on a high, as Aaron just squeezed out the hard and powerful Gary!

A safe and great night was had by all. The classes involved were enjoyed by the fans and fellow riders alike, and we look forward to next week for more action at Paris Speedway!

STATEMENT FROM THE BRITISH SPEEDWAY PROMOTERS ASSOCIATION

The introduction of the new Speedway silencers postponed - A joint decision with Great Britain, Denmark and Sweden.

The BSPA has decided to postpone the introduction of the new speedway silencers until the 1st of January 2011 in a joint decision with Denmark and Sweden. The consequence of the decision is that the "old" or the "new" silencers, in accordance with SCB SR 10.30.1 are approved in British domestic meetings during 2010 but not in FIM Championship Meetings.
We take the matter of lower noise levels very seriously and we had trust in, and were committed to, follow the FIM's decision.
Whilst some countries have held FIM meetings with riders using these new silencers we, Denmark and Sweden, have received strong claims from riders asking for more time in order to adjust the engines correctly, both to operate efficiently and safely.
It is for these reasons that we see no other way than to postpone the introduction date until 1st January, 2011.

NAIIR Final Round for 2010, NY State Indoor Ice Championships Results

Mittl, Clark and McBride were all tied on 6 points each going into the final while Estelle had 4. The racing was fairly good but it was a real shame that it appeared not much effort was put into making the ice thick enough for the event. We hit concrete after only two heat rounds and it really ruined what should have been some great finals. Any riders who had inside gates in the last portion of the night were pretty much out of luck as there was nothing but concrete to start off of, it looked like they had no screws in! Congrats to Dave Clark who rode well on the ice all winter. We hope referee Dennis Craven is feeling better today, he took one for the sport last night as a bike got into the inside of the track and knocked him over. He hit his head on the ice and had to get some stitches! Hopefully this won't stop him from doing some events this summer! Don Wheeland rode well to take the Support title! Congrats to Adam Mittl, who is the overall winner of the North American Indoor Ice Racing Series for this year.

JOE HEYE SERIOUSLY HURT IN ACCIDENT!!

Joe was out riding on the weekend of Sunday 11th April 2010,when he lost control and hit some trees, causing some severe injuries which include a broken left femur, broken facial bones, internal bruising and lung damage. He was taken by air ambulance to hospital, where doctors are awaiting the recovery of his lungs to operate on his injuries.

As of Monday 19th April...Joe has had his leg operation with good results but still has to undergo work on his facial bones.

As of Tuesday 20th April...Joe has successfully undergone his facial surgery.

Today (Tuesday) he is being transfered back to his local hospital in Simcoe.

1st May "Joe is doing remarkably well following his huge Moto-X accident. Mike Zelaska was in to see him on Friday at the Simcoe Hospital and he was surprised to find Joe outside enjoying the sunshine. He was also walking with and without his crutches. The doctors are encouraging him to walk on the leg to strengthen it and they are very pleased with his healing process.

His face injury is all but healed from the surgery, and his lungs are doing remarkably well. His prognosis is that he will likely be out of the hospital next week and is looking forward to coming to watch the practice at Paris Speedway on May 22nd."

Kelly Moran (born 21 September 1960 in Huntington Beach, USA) is a retired former professional speedway rider who rode for a number of British clubs and also represented USA.

Moran was a charismatic and spectacular performer. He was called the Jelly Man and the Wizard of Balance for the way he would hang off his machine when cornering. A naturally-talented rider, Kelly raced all over the world thrilling crowds with his showmanship and charm.

He arrived in England to race for Hull in 1978 as a teenager, but his season was curtailed when he crashed heavily at Hackney and suffered multiple injuries. However, the following year he qualified for his first World Championship and finished in fourth place - losing a four rider run-off.

A dispute over terms saw Kelly make a late start to his British season with Birmingham. But he was on the move again in 1981 when he joined the Eastbourne Eagles where he became a spectacular crowd pleaser. In 1982 he qualified for his second world championship in America and finished fourth again.

However, despite experiencing his best ever season he decided to remain in California for the next three years. During this period he won back-to-back US National Championships and qualified for his third - and final - world championship in 1984 finishing with 11 points and another fourth place.

In 1986 Kelly joined his younger brother Shawn at the Sheffield Tigers where he had 3 successful years and helped himself to 1012.5 points at an average of 8.88. He represented his country on several occasions and it was his partnership with Shawn that helped USA to the 1982 and 1990 World Team Cup title.

Following Sheffield's closure Kelly moved to Belle Vue with his brother, where he remained until a dip in form saw him move from Belle Vue to Swindon early in 1992. A broken collar bone interrupted his spell at Swindon, but he struggled for form in a team that was rooted at the foot of the league.

He retired from speedway at the end of the season, but he made a brief comeback in 2003 racing in North America. However, his comeback lasted just the one season.

Evans was brought up on the Monmore Green terraces before moving to the USA where he's been involved as a promoter and the co-driving force behind the Dream Team project with Gomez.
They will face the new Heathens side at Perry Barr on Wednesday, April 7 - subject to the club getting the green light from National League chiefs at their meeting later this month.
Said Evans: "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to take the guys to Birmingham for the opening night of the Heathens.
"From my own involvement in Billy Hamill's Farewell meeting last year I know how passionate Heathens fans are and it just shows how much they would support their team with their own track. This National League team is the next logical step towards bringing the Cradley name back.
"The old rivalry between Cradley and Wolves was amazing and although I'm delighted to be with my team on opening night I also want to beat them. It would be a nice feeling for me personally to beat the Heathens!"
Heathens bosses are awaiting news on their application to join the National League with the meeting set for January 27.
Team manager Will Pottinger, who visited Newport on Sunday for their New Year Classic, says the holiday period was a quiet time for the club.
He said: "Team plans are on hold until the National League meeting, that's what we are waiting for now. We are hopeful everything will be fine, but the other clubs have to decide on our application and until a decision is made we cannot make any further comment on the team.
"It's been a quiet time for us over Christmas and New Year, but things should start moving once we know where we stand with the league

"NATIONAL League newcomers Dudley Heathens will open the exciting new era of Speedway against the American tourists in April.
Heathens have officially applied for membership to the league and will share their home meetings between Perry Barr Stadium in Birmingham and Wolverhampton's Monmore Green.
Opening night will be on Wednesday, April 7 with Dudley facing up to the American Dream Team at Birmingham - and the first league fixture, subject to acceptance, is set for Wolverhampton on Tuesday, April 13.
Heathens chairman Nigel Pearson said: "It's a lovely irony that we should start the new era against the American boys. Cradley had a fantastic tradition with riders from the USA, including the likes of Bruce Penhall, Bobby Schwartz, Lance King, Billy Hamill and Greg Hancock.
"We are delighted to take on the Dream Team who have done such good work in recent seasons, including discovering Chris Kerr who won the Elite League with Wolves last season and will ride for Birmingham in 2010."

Admission prices will be £10 adults, £5 concessions and children aged 15 and under £2. Matchday programme, 'The Heathen', will cost £2.
Pearson and team boss Will Pottinger have met to discuss team plans but nothing can be announced on Heathens riders until the National League have considered their application on January 27."

Mittl takes the win on the ice!!

Tuff McBride was top scorer after the heats round with 3 wins. Adam Mittl was second, Dave Clark third in heat points. Gene Bonsignore had 2 wins and 1 fourth and was tied with Aaron Hesmer who I think had 1 win, 1 second and 1 third so they had a runoff for the last Main event position. Bonsignore led for most of the two lap race but Hesmer just caught him at the finish for the transfer. McBride led most of the Main but moved over in the same spot as Bonsignore where the ice had gotten down to the concrete and gave way to a fast Adam Mittl. Mittl took his second straight Main event win. Sean Neal won his second straight Pro ATV Main also!

Somerset rider killed in car crash!!

Somerset Rebels speedway star Emil Kramer has died in a road accident in his native Sweden.
The 30-year-old first joined the Rebels in 2006, quickly becoming a firm favourite, and was due to lead the Highbridge-based outfit in 2010.
"Our thoughts are obviously with Emil's family and close friends in their tragic bereavement," said a spokesman for the Rebels.
"To say that we are all devastated here at Somerset is an understatement."
Kramer was a member of Somerset's 2008 side that won the Premier League KO Cup and had just had his best season for the Rebels being voted rider of the year by the fans.He also rode for King's Lynn, Hull and Oxford in the Elite and Premier Leagues between 2002 and 2005.
"Words fail us at this time, the club is losing more than a team member, we have lost a family friend, and a great, great, friend in that," added the Rebels spokesman. "Anyone who spent time in Emil's company will agree he was a true gentleman of the sport, without a bad bone in his body.He always had time to spend with the fans, and it is a measure of Emil that he has received so many glowing tributes from speedway fans far and wide."
