Poole loose to Eastbourne 49-41!!

Kyle Legault contributed 2 points during his first full event for his new team Poole Pirates but this didn't help much as the home team was too strong. The Poole heat leaders scored freely but had insufficent support from the reserves and second strings. Home team rider Davey Watt was the rider of the meeting with 13 points from 5 rides. Top grand prix rider in his day, Carl Stonehewer, may have some of the blame, for the the loss, placed at his feet as he failed to score.
Just 4 points from him would have turned the Eagles win into a draw and a point for Poole .

Poole Castle Cover Pirates injury problems were extended this afternoon (Sunday 22nd March) when reserve Kyle Legault effectively withdrew from the Elite Shield first leg meeting at Eastbourne after taking his mandatory minimum 3 rides and that left the reigning Elite League champions further exposed in their opening team meeting, and leaves the Canadian doubtful for Wednesday
With the Elite Shield bringing together the league winners against the cup winners Poole were keen to eradicate the memories fo their 22 point cup final first leg defeat from last October and to a large extent they managed that, although the Poole camp were hoping to push the Eagles even closer than the 8 point deficit. Operating rider replacement for Jason Doyle the pressure was very much on the Pirates' lower order and with Legault struggling with a bad leg, seemingly still not 100% fit from last season's injuries, much of the Pirates burden fell on Carl Stonehewer's shoulders. But the Mancunian failed to trouble the scorers from a full quota of 7 outings and that left the Pirates having two riders with just 2 points from 7 rides.
Joe Screen, on his official club debut, had a meeting to remember claiming three wins and making some good passes during the meeting. His win count was matched by skipper Bjarne Pedersen with Chris Holder weighing in with two victories from his five outings.
Poole found themselves eight points adrift in the first five heats, a margin that could well have been less had bad luck not confronted heat 3 race leader Daniel Davidsson. Having led the heat for almost the full four laps, Davidsson lost control on the final curve and went down forcing the chasing Lewis Bridger to lay down instantly. Referee Dan Holt disqualified Davidsson and awarded the result in Bridger's favour with Screen second and Dryml third.
Poole therefore had to wait until heat 7 before they were able to claim their first, and it proved to be the only, heat advantage, when Screen and Davidsson combined for a 5-1 over David Norris and Ricky Kling.
Whilst the Pirates struggled from reserve the Eagles had Simon Gustafsson in spectacular form, the young Swede romping to a paid 12 return from 6 rides proving to be the Eagles match winner.
Scorers: Eagles (49) D.Watt 13; S.Gustafsson 11+1; L.Bridger 7+2; L.Dryml 6+1; C.Woodward 5+4; D.Norris 5+1; R.Kling 2+1
Pirates (41) B.Pedersen 12+1; J.Screen 12; C.Holder 10+1; D.Davidsson 5+1; K.Legault 2; C.Stonehewer 0; (rider replacement operated for J.Doyle).
