A terrific display by captain Phil Morris enabled Newcastle Diamonds to emerge from a turbulent weekend with two Premier Trophy points after defeating Sheffield Tigers 48-41 at Brough Park last night.

Just 24 hours earlier, Morris had had a nightmare match at Berwick when the second of two falls left him with a hand injury.

But the Diamonds' new skipper is a tough professional and won his first four races against Sheffield, twice beating Sean Wilson before the Tigers' captain gained partial revenge by winning the final heat.

Morris may have his hand X-rayed before Newcastle's next match at Hull on Wednesday but, after battling through the pain barrier last night, is unlikely to be an absentee.

After stealing the show against Sheffield, Morris said: "There's a lumpy bit at the base of my thumb but when I'm racing I don't notice the pain."

Morris received great support from Claus Kristensen and James Grieves, both of whom also defeated Wilson, and there were good returns from Pepe Franc and Jamie Robertson.

Kristensen and Franc took the only 5-1 of a closely-fought contest in the third heat to put the Diamonds ahead 10-7, but misfortunes for Robertson and Christian Henry, who both fell, resulted in the Tigers sneaking 24-23 ahead at the halfway stage.

Morris, however, led the fightback as the Diamonds took four of the next five races 4-2 to move to the brink of victory, which Franc wrapped up in the penultimate heat.

The visitors lost Ricky Ashworth in a heat 10 crash and, coupled with the absence of Andre Compton through a collarbone injury, they could not overcome the handicap.

The Diamonds themselves had suffered badly at Berwick, where they went down 55-39.

In addition to Morris's two falls, Franc, Grieves, Robertson and Henry also bit the dust, the latter being taken off to hospital wearing a neck brace.

Nonetheless, it was a plucky show from the Diamonds and their three former Bandits, Kristensen, Franc and Grieves, kept them in the hunt for the bonus point.

Henry was not expected to ride last night, and probably wished he hadn't bothered as he ended up without a point after two machine problems were followed by a fall in heat eight. Lubos Tomicek also suffered two engine failures and he too failed to score.

Team manager George English said: "Despite all the problems of the weekend, our team spirit shone through and it's a good feeling to have two points in the bag at the end of it."

SCORERS: YESTERDAY - Newcastle: Phil Morris 14, Claus Kristensen 10, James Grieves 10, Pepe Franc 8, Jamie Robertson 6, Christian Henry 0, Lubos Tomicek 0.

Sheffield: Sean Wilson 13, Richard Hall 9, Ben Wilson 6, Benji Compton 5, Ricky Ashworth 4, Kyle Legault 4.
