Lazorbeam Zaps em at BMS

Summer Season Opener/Batavia Motor Speedway
By Jason Bonsignore
June 2nd, 2006 Batavia, NY

East Coast Speedway Star, George "Lazorbeam" Lazor, is now competing in his 30th season of professional speedway motorcycle racing. Logic says that one would maybe have lost a step at middle age but Lazor seems faster than ever and proved it by taking home the summer season opener at Batavia Motor Speedway.
Spectator numbers were again down due to some cold and cloudy weather conditions but those who did brave the elements were heated up by the Lazorbeam! The multi-time dirt and ice champion rolled through the program suffering his only loss at the hands of hot shot youngster, Casey Donholt.
Binghamtons teenage fast guy, Mikey Buman, and the previous race winner, "Mean" Gene Bonsignore of Rochester were also riders who had early success in the program. By virtue of winning the semis, Donholt and Bonsignore went directly to the final. Lazor and Buman earned spots with second places. Division One rookie, Ryan "Killer" Kaza, was quite impressive throughout the evening and qualified for his first ever Scratch Main event by taking the checkers in the last chance.
Buman had the pole for the Main and was looking at Lazor to the left in two, Donholt in three, Bonsignore in four and Kaza in five. There was some excitement at the line as it appeared both Donholt and Bonsignore touched the tapes. BMS had been suffering some gate malfunctions through the first two weeks and it was determined by the scorers that the outside slider was sticking so all five were brought back for a second try. On the restart Lazor blasted into the lead followed by Buman. Although it was Lazor from pole to pole it wasn't as boring as it sounds. Buman pressured hard and almost caught Lazor at the last corner, Donholt was all over Buman and Bonsignore was hard on Donholt. All five riders were within a couple bikes of each other making for a great feature.
The support program was great culminating in a 7 rider 6 lap Handicap style Main. Deanna Holden did the girls proud from the 20 yard line taking her first win of her season but not without tough competition from rookie, Mark "Battlescar" Bradley. Corey Brookes, Katalin Davis, Andy Crawford and Robin Wilt all rode well making for an exciting race in which there were several passes and near pile ups!
