Transcan Monster Energy Nationals. Walton.
Monster Energy/Cernics/Kawasaki's Paul Carpenter ended the season the way he began it with the overall win of the MX1 class at Round 9 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals in Walton, Ontario on Sunday. The Ithaca, NY native's tour de force performance earned him the prestigious "King of Walton" title and sword, presented by Walton TransCan Grand National promoter Chris Lee.
Carpenter's Monster Energy/Cernics/Kawasaki teammate, Tucker Hibbert, made it a perfect weekend for Team Green by snaring the overall of the MX2 East-West Shootout. Hibbert did the trick with 2-1 motos.
The highly anticipated return of ’06 MX1 National Champion Dusty Klatt, who was scheduled to ride as a guest with his former team, Blackfoot Racing, to challenge his old rivals in a one-off race, came to an abrupt end when he broke his hand during a morning practice session.
Unfortunately for Team Toyota Yamaha BlackfootDirect.com Fox Racing, Klatt wasn't the only one of their riders who was unable to compete in Walton. Their MX2 West Champion, Jimmy Nelson, was unable to start due a back injury he collected racing in his home state of Nevada. The team's MX2 East rider, Nick Evennou, couldn’t make the starting lineup due to a hand injury. This left Blackfoot without representation in the MX2 Shootout.
Clean sweep for Carpenter
In MX1 moto one, a hard crash by Yamaha Canada's Davey Fraser, which left him with a severe concussion, brought out the red flag just before the end of the first lap. In the restart, Denny's Kawasaki rider Jeff Northrop took the field in tow around turn one, followed by Team Toyota Yamaha BlackfootDirect.com Fox Racing's Jean Sebastien Roy who took over the lead on lap four. Two laps later, Carpenter, who was fourth off the start, relieved Roy at the front of the pack, taking it all the way to the finish line. Carpenter, who locked in the MX1 Championship one week ago at Sand Del Lee, put a 12-second gap between himself and second placer finisher Roy by the time the checkered was waved. Meanwhile, Northrop settled into his own pace to claim a third place finish.
In the second moto, Northrop again pegged the holeshot and this time managed to stay at the front of the pack for five laps, that's when Carpenter took over, and he never looked back. For Roy, the moto was over as quickly as it started when he went down shortly after the start of the race. A rock ended up stuck in his brake pedal, effectively putting him on the sidelines. Roy's teammate, Blair Morgan, who finished 10th in the first moto, exited the track on the same lap with an electrical problem.
Not all was lost for Team Yamaha, however. Colton Facciotti, who rounded turn one in third, took over second place from Northrop on lap six. Thanks to a fourth place in the first moto, Facciotti snared second overall for the day and managed to bump Monster Energy/Cernics/Kawasaki’s Jeff Gibson, who finished fourth overall on the strength of 5-4 motos, from runner-up in the championship.
Hibbert guns them down in East-West Shootout
In the MX2 East-West Shootout, New York's Phillip Nicoletti, making his debut in Canada, took his American Honda to a decisive first moto win. He led all but three laps on his way to victory ahead of Tucker Hibbert who finished in second place, and '07 MX2 East Champion Michael Willard who recorded third.
The second moto saw Royal Distributing Stoneridge KTM's Willard grab the holeshot and lead till about the halfway mark. Hibbert, however, had plans of his own and stuck a pass on Willard. Once in control Hibbert was never challenged for the lead, staying up front till the checkered. Willard finished the day in second overall while his KTM teammate, Mason Phillips, carded third overall on the strength of 5-3 motos. Courtesy Wil De Clerq.
