Oh what a night!! 27th May 2006! Jim Hesmer Memorial.(New pics in links)

(one-two in the main, Aaron leads jeff)

After a week of wet weather the skies cleared and the sun came out for the season opener, The Jim Hesmer Memorial race, which was also the first event promoted by the SPG group. An excellent race track, no dust at all, set the table and the riders responded with some top notch exciting racing to the delight of the large crowd.
In a night that had lots to entertain the fans, plenty of passing, lead changes, tight finishes, spectacular rides and a spill or two, there was no doubt that the rider of the night was 20 year-old Aaron Hesmer who shook of the responsibilities of being the main man for the SPG group to wow the crowd with a dynamic performance as he went through the night unbeaten.
Four of his five wins were earned from the back and mostly with powerful bursts around the outside of his rivals instead of his patented inside line. His first win came when he slipped inside when Bobby Muszynski hooked up and drove across the track just regaining control before he hit the boards. His last came in the final when he caught and passed Jeff Orosz to take the win with American Brian Hollenbeck and Joe Heye following them home.
But the most exciting was a tremendous battle with Joe Heye in which Hesmer just found enough drive in the run to the line to catch and inch ahead of Heye as the flashed over the line. The winning margin couldn't have been more than a tire width!
Other spectacular moments came when Jeff Orosz picked up traction coming out of turn four and wheelied for almost the entire length of the straightas he fought for control. Being Jeff he won the battle and the race too. Then Peter Fornal looped and came off as he left the line in one race while American Andy Crawford slid off and into the boards a couple of times, one at each end of the track.
Bobby Muszynski, making his return to the track after a two year absence, is still the same exciting rider and but for the mistake in his first ride would have made the final. Rob Dixon was another to show well in a couple of races.
With one of his falls costing him points, Andy Crawford had to win his final race to take D2 honours which he did in fine style with Terry Rideout and Tim Murray swapping places behind him with Rideout finally taking second in the race and on the night.
Instead of D3 a Veterans class was added to the program. In this George Lavender from Welland make a dream debut , five comfortable wins in five races to easily finish in front of Alan Chisholm and Peter Fornal.
D one..Aaron Hesmer. 16 pts. Jeff Orosz. 15 pts. Brian Hollenbeck. 12 pts. Joe Heye. 12pts.
D two..Andy Crawford. 16 pts. Terry Rideout. 15 pts. Tim Murray. 12 pts.
Vets....George Lavender. 20 pts. Alan Chisholm. 15 pts. Peter Fornal.1 0 pts.
Thanks to Duncan Luke for this report and results.

TIGERS GO TOP (OF LEAGUE) AFTER CLOSE CALL

SHEFFIELD Pirtek Tigers are top of the Premier League after their hard fought 48-45 win over Somerset Rebels at Owlerton on Thursday night.
Reg Wilson's men were given their toughest home test of the season by a gutsy Rebels outfit but did enough to secure the win on the night and the aggregate bonus point courtesy of their win in Highbridge earlier this month.
Skipper Andre Compton looked set for another full house before trailing in last in heat 15 - thankfully by this stage Tigers were just about home and dry.
Visiting boss Mick Bell did well with his tactical moves and his riders responded with a solid display which gave title hopefuls Sheffield a scare.
The meeting also served up some of the best racing seen at Owlerton this season and Somerset deserve credit for that as they refused to let the home side run away with proceedings.
TIGERS: Andre Compton 12, Ricky Ashworth 11+2, Ben Wilson 9+1, Kyle Legault 6+1, Emiliano Sanchez 5+2, Paul Cooper 4, Benji Compton 1.
SOMERSET: Paul Fry 15+1, Magnus Zetterstrom 10, Ben Barker 7, Glenn Cunningham 6, Glen Phillips 4+3, Stephan Katt 2+2, Simon Walker 1.

Racing at Action Park a possibility for '06??

There is starting to be a possibility that there may be some races at Action
Park East this summer. I have gone out and along with the help of Dale
Holden secured nearly all of the rent money from sponsors in order to allow
someone an opportunity to promote races there this year. At this point we
are only $2,500.00 short but will continue to keep striving. Signboards can
be purchased for the crashwall for as little as $100.00.
Providing we reach our financial goal, I have had strong discussion with a
group, headed by 1987 US Open Champion Tom Burge, that is willing to promote
the events. A plan for a 6-8 event schedule that would start in mid June and
run nearly every other Saturday is in the works. Racing would include
Division One and Support Speedway, Quads, Flat Track,Youth Classes and
possibly a Go-Kart Class. I have found a person who is willing to help us
and provide a bunch of new Clay to help get the track as smooth as Champion
and Batavia.
Three things must happen quickly in order for this to become reality...
We need to raise the remaining funds. It doesn't matter where or who it
comes from but I feel as though I have done a very generous thing by doing
most of the work myself and offering to lease the track to someone with the
rent already covered. It is time for some of the riders and interested
parties to do some work on it also. It should be a very easy goal to reach.
Tom or I need to hear from riders who plan to race to see what sort of
support Tom will have for this. He can be reached at 607 687 5131 or I can
be called at 585 723-9746. Riders who owe me money or have family members
who owe me money need not call until your debts are paid.
Tom will need the help of some riders, fans or supporters to help do some
clean-up, painting and mowing at the track and to help do several
advertising flier campaigns around the local neighborhoods. This should be
very little to ask to give back in return for having speedway continue in
some fashion locally. Anyone who ignores this message thinking that they
will just wait for speedway at Champion Speedway will be foolish...there are
NOT any plans for speedway at Champion now or any time soon. The facility is
going to be used for other things now so I strongly urge anyone who wants to
race or see speedway to help make Action Park happen for this year.
Thank You,
Jason Bonsignore

Opening night at Batavia. Friday 19th May

Batavia ran last night even with the shaky weather conditions. It was freezing cold with lots of clouds in the sky but fortunately it didn't rain till the end of the program. There was a very low spectator turnout and it was a bit thin on speedway bikes but still there was exactly 50 entries(carts, flat track, 50/80's etc). The track was very good though. Next race is June 2nd and a very good speedway program is expected with the Hesmers and several riders from Canada expected along with Tuff McBride, Russ Cornell, Pat Cliff, Ryan Kaza, Dave Oakden, Casey Donholt, Corey Brookes, Greg Didas and others making their debuts. Many thanks to Adam Mittl, Merle Craven, Katalin Davis, Andy Crawford, Mikey Buman and Ed Reilly for all making the long trip up from the Binghamton area to support us last night with the uncertainty of the weather.

Another great night for Kyle!!

TIGERS 57 WORKINGTON 38. TIGERS became to first team to take a Premier Trophy aggregate bonus point from the pace-setting Comets as they took a stride towards the semi-finals. The Owlerton men flexed their muscles with heat wins in five of the last six races to snuff out any hopes the Cumbrians had of defending the five-point advantage from the first leg at Derwent Park in March. Sheffield skipper Andre Compton again led by example, unbeaten by an opponent in five rides, while Ricky Ashworth carded 12 and the lively Kyle Legault also notched double figures. Compton was headed only once, as he made a hash of the start in Heat 15 but roared round the boards to pass Workington big guns Paul Thorp and Garry Stead inside half a lap. Emiliano Sanchez proved that he's getting to grips with his new base with paid eight, including an impressive win in Heat 12, while the Argentinean was also in the thick of it in Heat 3 when he trapped, only to be passed by Comets' highly-rated James Wright - but Legault shot past everyone to score his first win of the night. Tigers were ten up after eight heats and even though the Comets reduced the deficit to seven points in the next race, Sheffield simply had too much firepower in the final clutch of heats. Thorp and Stead were best for the visitors, while the bonus point will now give Tigers a hefty boost in their claim for a top two slot in the Trophy's Northern Section. Workington lost reserve Lee Derbyshire with a broken tibia and fibula in his first race after crashing on turn four, leaving Aidan Collins to take a mountainous seven rides. TIGERS: Andre Compton 14+1, Ricky Ashworth 12, Kyle Legault 9+1, Emiliano Sanchez 7+1, Ben Wilson 5+2, Paul Cooper 5+1, Benji Compton 5+1. WORKINGTON: Paul Thorp 12, Garry Stead 11, James Wright 7, Tomasz Piszcz 5+2, Ritchie Hawkins 2, Aidan Collins 1, Lee Derbyshire 0.
