TIGERS 64 NEWCASTLE 30. SHEFFIELD Pirtek Tigers romped home to an easy Premier Trophy win over Newcastle at Owlerton. No less than three Pirtek Tigers men - brothers Andre and Benji Compton and Kyle Legault were unbeaten by a visiting rider in a powerhouse performance. Diamonds boss George English nominated both George Stancl - who started his career with Sheffield in 1994 - and Josef Franc for double points under the tactical rule but they failed to make any significant impression on the match. Captain Compton was troubled only once when he trailed Stancl from the start of Heat 15, but he wasted no time in lining up his man and at high speed he swooped inside on the third turn to take the lead and complete his maximum. Legault had already completed his 12-point maximum in the previous race when he got the better of Franc and Benji Compton, in his debut Premier League season, beat Newcastle reserve Jamie Robertson to get his full house in Heat 12. TIGERS: Andre Compton 15, Kyle Legault 12, Ben Wilson 11+1, Benji Compton 9+3, Ricky Ashworth 8+2, Emiliano Sanchez 6+1, Paul Cooper 3. NEWCASTLE: George Stancl 11, Josef Franc 8+1, James Grieves 4, Jamie Roberston 3, Christian Henry 2+1, Adam McKinna 1+1, Manuel Hauzinger 1. Sheffield go down at Rye House
RYE HOUSE 53 SHEFFIELD 40, TIGERS opened up their Premier League campaign with defeat at Rye House - but the performance was on a different level to their tame Hoddesdon surrenders of last season. On three visits to the Hertfordshire venue in 2005 Tigers conceded over 60 points, but they kept things much tighter on this occasion despite a nightmare start, and should be capable of taking the aggregate bonus later in the season. There were early alarm bells when the Rockets started with three 5-1s, but Tigers then got to grips with the slightly slippery surface and took their first race win when Andre Compton headed Stuart Robson home in Heat 6. That was the first of two consecutive 4-2s with Emiliano Sanchez also winning his second ride, and when Compton won his tactical ride in Heat 9 the gap was down to seven points - which became five mainly thanks to another Sanchez success in the following race, Robson passing Kyle Legault for second place in the closing stages. In Heat 11, however, Ricky Ashworth was excluded for causing Luke Bowen to fall as Chris Neath finally came to life with a race win, and the Rockets then eased clear with maximum points in the next race.Ashworth, though, did not allow the exclusion to get to him as he impressively won Heat 13 from Robson and Neath, and although Rye took another 5-1 in Heat 14, Tigers finished well with Compton's last race win and Ashworth's third place leaving the gap at 13 points after a creditable effort. RYE HOUSE: Edward Kennett 12+1, Steve Boxall 9+2, Stuart Robson 9, Luke Bowen 9, Tommy Allen 7+2, Chris Neath 4+1, Jamie Courtney 3+2. TIGERS: Andre Compton 13+1, Emiliano Sanchez 7, Ricky Ashworth 7, Ben Wilson 5, Paul Cooper 3, Kyle Legault 3, Benji Compton 2.

Big boost for Legault!!
PIRTEK Tiger Kyle Legault celebrated in style with three wins at Owlerton on Thursday in the Premier Trophy win over Berwick Bandits. Legault, who was riding a Sean Wilson-tuned engine, was the lucky recipient of a further race-tuned engine purchased with sponsorship co-funded by Nigel Broome of Alphaweld Limited and the S.T.A.A.R.S. support group. Kyle said "It is my sole intention to focus on the Under-21 World Championship, this support is tremendous and will enable the best possible challenge for the title." Sheffield are at Rye house Sat 25th. 2.45 gmt(2.45 est)
Great event for Kyle!!
SHEFFIELD 58 BERWICK 37. TIGERS warmed up for their Premier League opener at Rye House on Saturday with a comfortable win over Berwick in their first home Premier Trophy encounter. Skipper Andre Compton roared to a paid maximum, and he would have been joined in the unbeaten stakes by Ricky Ashworth but for mechanical problems for Tigers' second heat-leader in the last race. Sheffield were never troubled by the Border outfit as they notched wins in the first four races to open up a 17-7 gap. By the halfway mark they led 32-16, and they would have more points in the bag but for a fall while leading by new boy Emiliano Sanchez and Ashworth's motor trouble in the finale as he looked set to partner Compton to Tigers' fourth 5-1 of the night. Sanchez recovered from his Heat 5 spill, as he overcooked it on the last bend while leading, to bag a victory from the back in Heat 12 as well as claiming two thirds and looks like being a promising acquisition. Canadian Kyle Legault also went close to a maximum, but after winning his first three rides in style he was beaten in Heat 14 as Bandits' Michal Makovsky took advantage of a mix-up between Legault and team-mate Paul Cooper to speed through and take the flag. Ironically it was Berwick's only race win of the night, and it came with Makovsky on a double-point tactical ride. But the win, with Sheffield solid throughout - including a promising home debut for young Benji Compton - will give the team plenty of confidence ahead of Saturday's acid test at Hoddesdon. TIGERS: Andre Compton 14+1, Ricky Ashworth 12, Kyle Legault 11, Benji Compton 6+1, Ben Wilson 6, Emiliano Sanchez 5, Paul Cooper 4+2. BERWICK: Michal Makovsky 13, Adrian Rymel 9, Andreas Bergstrom 8, Lee Smethills 3+1, Danny Warwick 2+1, David Meldrum 1+1, Craig Branney 1.

Berwick Bandits hit town Thursday!!
THE Pirtek Tigers go into Owlerton action as a team for the first time this season when they face Berwick on Thursday in the Premier Trophy (7.45pm) 2.45 est. On paper, they start as strong favourites against a Bandits side which is much-changed from the squad with finished an impressive second in last year's Premier League. However, the visitors will be fired-up for the meeting after being on the receiving end of a blast from Peter Waite who has been far from impressed with two home defeats so far - and has already threatened team changes. Ben Wilson hopes to make his return to the Tigers' line-up following treatment on the knee injury he picked up at King's Lynn last Wednesday, a problem which caused him to miss the trip to Workington last weekend. Wilson has been having intensive treatment, assisted by staff from Sheffield Utd FC, in a bid to be fit.Tigers promoter Neil Machin is taking nothing for granted, and said: "It will be good to get off the mark at home although we know there will be no room for complacency against Berwick. They have struggled so far, but if their new men click then they will be dangerous." PIRTEK TIGERS: Ricky Ashworth, Ben Wilson, Emiliano Sanchez, Kyle Legault, Andre Compton, Paul Cooper, Benji Compton. BERWICK: Adrian Rymel, David Meldrum, Lee Smethills, Michal Makovsky, Andreas Bergstrom, Danny Warwick, Craig Branney. *THURSDAY'S second half will feature a full-scale first team practice session due to the lack of track time so far as the riders carry out further work on set-ups.

Star studded field for Sean Wilsons' cracker.
FORMER World Champion Jason Crump was victorious in the Sean Cracker at Owlerton on - Sunday, March 19, 2006, winning a Final which would have graced the last race of a Grand Prix. A bumper crowd enjoyed a well-organised and fully competitive meeting which was packed full of quality, safe racing. Crump headed the qualifying scores on Sean Wilson's big day to book an automatic Final place and duly converted that into overall victory ahead of a furious scrap for second place eventually settled in the favour of Nicki Pedersen, who overcame Scott Nicholls on the run-in to the line. Leigh Adams took fourth place overall after ending the chances of former Tigers star Simon Stead by overtaking him late in the semi-final - that race also seeing the end of current Sheffield captain Andre Compton's chances. Fredrik Lindgren and Ryan Sullivan were the next closest riders to making the top six and a shot at the major prizes, but both paid the penalty for running last places. Wilson himself scored six points, losing a race win in Heat 5 due to a last-bend engine failure which always left him just off the qualifying mark - but the day still belonged to the hugely popular former Tigers skipper. FINAL: 1. Jason Crump, 2. Nicki Pedersen, 3. Scott Nicholls, 4. Leigh Adams. SEMI-FINAL: 1. Scott Nicholls, 2. Leigh Adams, 3. Simon Stead, 4. Andre Compton. Sheffield loose, away at Workington.Sat 18th March
THE Pirtek Tigers battled back from an early deficit to hold Workington to a five-point winning margin in Saturday's Premier Trophy opener at Derwent Park. A succession of early heat advantages saw the visitors go 14 points down after seven heats, but some excellent riding from the heat-leaders saw Tigers come back into contention and make themselves hot favourites for the bonus point. Tigers used rider replacement for Ben Wilson who was suffering the effects of his crash at King's Lynn and Paul Cooper became their first heat winner when he took the flag in Heat 2. However it was Heat 9 before another Sheffield rider won a race with skipper Andre Compton taking a big six-pointer for a tactical ride win. The gap continued to be trimmed as Ricky Ashworth recovered well from a disappointing opening, winning Heat 11 and then partnering Compton to a 5-1 in Heat 13 to leave the scores at 44-39. James Wright and Aidan Collins wrapped up victory for the Comets in the next race, though, before Compton and Ashworth again took maximum points in the last race. WORKINGTON: James Wright 10+1, Ritchie Hawkins 9+1, Garry Stead 9, Tomasz Piszcz 7+1, Aidan Collins 6+1, Paul Thorp 6, Lee Derbyshire 3+1. TIGERS: Andre Compton 16, Emiliano Sanchez 13, Ricky Ashworth 9+2, Paul Cooper 5+1, Kyle Legault 2, Benji Compton 0, Ben Wilson r/r.

Thursdays first home meeting called off!
THURSDAY'S fixture between the Pirtek Tigers and King's Lynn was called off due to the weather conditions. Extensive track work had taken place in order to get the meeting on, but the steady rain showed no sign of abating and a decision was taken in order to prevent people form travelling. No new date has yet been arranged, and the first, home, meeting of the season will therefore be the re-arranged Sean Cracker on Sunday at 5pm.Next away action is Saturday, March 18, 2006 19:00(2.00pm est)Workington v Sheffield (PT)

"King's Lynn are a powerful side, many people are tipping them to win the Premier League title this season, so it's a tough test for our first home meeting. KING'S LYNN: Daniel Nermark, Trevor Harding, Troy Batchelor, Kevin Doolan, Tomas Topinka, Chris Mills, Simon Lambert.
Sheffield loose away!! 55-37
THE Pirtek Tigers will need to pull back an 18-point deficit in Thursday's second leg at Owlerton if they are to take an aggregate win over much-fancied King's Lynn. But there were several encouraging signs from the first leg at the Norfolk Arena with the visitors recovering well after a poor start. Despite a win from Ricky Ashworth in Heat 1, Tigers conceded four 5-1s in the space of five races to go 30-12 down after Heat 7 - and there was also a painful start to the season for Ben Wilson who needed attention after crashing out of the first race. Emiliano Sanchez took his first win in Tigers colours in Heat 10 as Kyle Legault held Daniel Nermark behind him for a Sheffield 5-1 to reduce the deficit to 14 points. Legault was excluded from his final ride after being adjudged the cause of a three-man accident on the second bend of Heat 14, and the Stars took full advantage with a 5-1 over Benji Compton. But Tigers finished well with a 4-2 over the previously unbeaten Stars duo of Tomas Topinka and Kevin Doolan with skipper Andre Compton taking the win and Ashworth coming home third. KING'S LYNN: Tomas Topinka 14, Kevin Doolan 11+1, Troy Batchelor 9+1, Chris Mills 7+2, Daniel Nermark 7, Trevor Harding 6+2, Simon Lambert 1. SHEFFIELD: Ricky Ashworth 9, Andre Compton 8, Emiliano Sanchez 7, Ben Wilson 5+1, Benji Compton 3+2, Paul Cooper 3+1, Kyle Legault 2+1.

Barlow, once again!! Feb 26th 2006
Round 10 – The Family Arena, St Charles, Missouri. As the Series rolled into the Missouri town of St Charles, the night after the St Louis Mardi Gras Parade, the Family Arena at St Charles provided a fitting venue for the Final Meeting of the 2006 Series. Although Anthony “British Bulldog” Barlow had sewn the Series up following his win at Rockford, the chase was on for the minor placing and even though Ronny Kemp in 2nd place was 10 championship points ahead of 3rd placed James Mann, it was still possible for Mann, the Brit now living in nearby Warrenton to bridge the gap and grab a 2nd place in the Series Championship behind his friend and adversary Barlow. A little further down the Leader Board in 4th place was Scott Courtney, 6 points behind Mann with Gary Phelps a further 3 points behind. Heat 1 as always saw the appearance of the Series leading scorers and it was Barlow who made no mistakes in the re-run by taking a win from Mann who was well clear of Ronny Kemp and Scott Courtney. Heat 2 saw so many changes in the race order that anyone looking at the Lap chart would have thought the races were taking place on a quarter mile oval rather than a 709 – yard ice circuit. At the flag however it was Phelps in the lead from Meldrum, Kelley and Dorfmeyer. Heat 3 produced yet another win for Darren Pearson, who knows where he would have finished on the Leader Board had he been able to take his place at the start of the Series instead of competing in just half of the meetings. The first heat of the second group of qualifiers was another excellent race with Barlow just getting the win from David Meldrum who was followed home by Pearson. Ronny Kemp, still nursing a very sore shoulder that he sustained in Lexington, showed steely determination to win the next heat ahead of Phelps, Dorfmeyer and Kemp while the last qualifying race resulted in an easy win for Mann over Courtney, Terchilla and Hathaway. A Last Chance pole position for Darren Pearson was wasted as he slipped back down the field to 4th and as a result gave Scott Courtney, starting on the back row a top 3 finish and a place in the Main Final, albeit on the Back Row.In the first running of the Main Final Phelps struggled to get his bike going in time and just beat the 2-minute time allowance by coming out on Dorfmeyer’s machine. Entering the 3rd turn on the 1st lap Courtney was a little too ambitious and caused a crash which meant he started on the back row. However Phelps was still struggling with his machinery and when the new 2-minute allowance had expired he stayed in the Pits, a very disillusioned Rider as he was chasing Courtney at that stage for a 4th place in the Series. It was not to be however as 5 Riders lined up on 3 rows (Courtney at the back on his own) when Barlow made the gate and held on from Mann for a very pleasing 1st place, with Kemp finishing 3rd , Meldrum in 4th and Courtney unable to make any impression and being gifted 5th place. This AMA sanctioned, FIM inscribed event is now a permanent feature of the US Speedway calendar and it will be interesting to see who signs up for the 2007 Series, which is already being planned. Qualifying Heats: 1. Barlow, Mann, Kemp, Courtney 2. Phelps, Meldrum, Kelley, Dorfmeyer 3. Pearson, Kelley, Hathaway, Terchilla 4. Barlow, Meldrum, Pearson 5. Kemp, Phelps, Dorfmeyer, Kelley 6. Mann, Courtney, Terchilla, Hathaway. Last Chance: Kemp. Meldrum, Courtney, Pearson, Dorfmeyer, Kelley (f) Main: Barlow, Mann, Kemp, Meldrum, Courtney, Phelps (n2) Series Result: Barlow 136pts, Kemp 90, 1, Mann 83, Courtney 69, Phelps 68, Meldrum 56.
